Sweet Tidings: Making Chocolate in Early America

On June 19, 2010 Indulge your sweet tooth with visitor favorite Susan Plaisted, who will demonstrate how colonists turned cocoa beans into the sweet confection we know today as chocolate. Admission also includes a tour of the historic Mill at Anselma, where you can watch wheat being turned into flour and sample some baked delicacies in our gift shop. The Mill at Anselma (c. 1747) served its local agricultural community for three centuries and is considered the most complete example of a Colonial-era custom grist mill in the United States. Now restored and recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the Mill at Anselma provides a powerful educational resource, allowing visitors to experience Chester County’s industrial and agricultural past through flour milling demonstrations, tours of the site and hands-on family activities.
