Delta Wedding, by Eudora Welty 1945. Set in Delta, Mississippi in 1923, where nine-year-old Laura travels to attend the wedding of her cousin, the book’s “period detail came from Welty’s own experiences as a young girl, but the impetus to expand the tale into the novel seems to have been the result of visits to the Delta relatives of her beloved friend, John Robinson, and a fascinated reading of the diaries of one of his female ancestors, whose mid-nineteenth-century experiences of hardship and war would then provide inspiration for and parallels to the Fairchild women…The result is a novel which, while set in the past, is preparing its many protagonists to face a future the reader knows all too well: the Great Depression, World War II, the Atomic Age.” (Novelist)
